Recycled Book Demonstration

I was invited once again to demonstrate at the Kentucky Artisan Center in Berea.  I used the Coptic Stitch on upcycled books, working with recycled paper and mostly old Reader's Digest covers.  It was a really fun day with a variety of people streaming through-mostly people traveling on their way somewhere else.  Such rich conversations emerged.  One guy walked up to me and said, "You are costing me alot of money".  My eyes grew wide as I waited for an explanation.  "My granddaughter fell in love with one of your books here yesterday, and we ended up staying an extra night in the area so that she could come back in get it."  The granddaughter was very cool-shy with intelligent eyes.  She is interested in horses and writing.  Her grandparents took her picture with me.  It was all too fun!  I appreciate the Artisan Center for these kinds of opportunities, for carrying my work, and for being so supportive of artists.  Do stop by if you are every traveling down I-75.

Demonstration at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea

I was invited to do a demonstration at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.  If you have never visited the Artisan Center, you should.  They always have a fabulous art exhibit on various themes and feature so many KY artists.  I really love having my work for sell there as well as working with them.  So, I was delighted to be able to to a demo.  I took my paper cutter, sewing tools, paper, and book covers and bascially sewed and chatted with folks about book binding all day.  It was really fun as well as relaxing.  I focused on repurposed book covers, namely old Reader's Digest, and showed how I use those to create a new book.  One important thing to remember is that all book covers get thrown away...only the insides of books can be recycled.  This is a way to re-use those book covers.  Check out the video and pics...all of them are courtesy of the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea!

Kentucky Textile and Fashion Expo

I was happy to join the Lexington Fashion Collabortive and participate in the Kentucky Textile and Fashion Expo yesterday.  As I watched the models show off various designs and accessories, I couldn't help but think how fantastically my work fit it.  I, too, deal largely in textures and color and combining the two in a way that is pleasing to the senses.  Whether its various leathers or an old book cover, I greatly appreciate watching people look at and pick up my books, deeply enjoying each piece in its entirety.  I encourage folks to do so.  The texture is a great part of the fun.
